Defend 22nd Amendment and Democratic Norms Against Unlawful Power Grabs

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer, Rep. Clarke

From: A verified voter in Brooklyn, NY

March 31

The recent comments from President Trump about seeking an unconstitutional third term are deeply concerning for the future of American democracy. The Constitution is clear that no person can serve more than two elected terms as president. Any attempts to circumvent this vital rule through loopholes or emergency powers would represent a dangerous violation of our nation's founding principles and system of checks and balances. We must firmly reject any efforts towards authoritarian rule that undermine the peaceful transition of power and our democratic norms. The United States has long stood as a beacon of freedom and constitutional order around the world. Allowing a president to illegally extend their time in office would not only betray our values, but could open the door to even graver abuses of power down the line. I urge you to take a strong, public stand defending the 22nd Amendment's two-term limit and making clear that any extra-constitutional efforts to keep the current president in power beyond 2029 will not be tolerated. We cannot allow our democracy to be steadily eroded from within through anti-democratic rhetoric and actions. The rule of law and our most sacred founding document must be vigorously upheld at all costs. The world is watching to see if America remains true to its ideals of liberty and self-governance.
