Protect Big Bend National Park from CBP's Regulatory Waivers

To: Sen. Cruz, Pres. Trump, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Veasey

From: A constituent in Fort Worth, TX

August 7

Block the Trump administration's latest regulatory waiver for the Big Bend 4 project. Homeland Security's Markwayne Mullin just signed a waiver bypassing more than 100 federal environmental laws across over 100 miles of border running through Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park. This gives CBP unchecked authority to build roads, install barriers, and deploy surveillance infrastructure inside one of America's most irreplaceable wild places. Six former superintendents of Big Bend National Park already wrote to Mullin asking him not to do this. He did it anyway. Bob Krumenaker, the park's most recent former superintendent, called it "devastating news, giving CBP unfettered authority to do anything they want within the national park." CBP's own data shows minimal border crossing activity inside the park. There is no operational justification that outweighs the permanent damage this construction would cause to Big Bend's ecosystems, landscapes, and the millions of Americans who treasure them. Push back on this waiver. Demand that CBP restore full legal protections for Big Bend National Park and halt the Big Bend 4 project until proper environmental review is completed.
