I am writing to you concerning the disgusting conduct of Rep. Nancy Mace during today’s committee hearing, during which she repeatedly referred to transgender individuals by using a slur. An elected official of her rank should be above using such vile, derogatory remarks to refer to others. Whether or not she “agrees” with someone’s existence, it is her responsibility to show some level of respect and decorum while performing her duties. As a member of the LGBTQ community that she so openly despises, I demand you hold her accountable and censure her or otherwise place sanctions on her to remind every one of our elected officials that they have a code of conduct to live by. Nancy Mace claims she fights for women’s safety, but her brand of rhetoric not only harms transgender women but also cisgender women who don’t conform to a certain visual aesthetic of womanhood. Representative Mace’s vitriolic drivel isn’t fact and it isn’t protecting anybody. Bigotry will not be tolerated!
