The Trump administration's decision to shut down the LGBTQ youth suicide hotline is deeply concerning and harmful. Study after study has shown that LGBTQ youth face disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation due to societal discrimination and lack of support systems. The "Press 3" option provided a vital lifeline, connecting these vulnerable young people with trained counselors who understand their unique challenges and can provide affirming, culturally competent support in times of crisis. Eliminating this specialized service will undoubtedly cost lives. While the general 988 lifeline is a valuable resource, not all counselors have the specific training needed to effectively assist LGBTQ callers grappling with issues like gender dysphoria, family rejection, and minority stress. The Trevor Project has handled over 1.3 million calls from LGBTQ youth since the program began, underscoring the urgent need for these targeted services. I urge you to take immediate action to reverse this misguided policy decision. LGBTQ youth deserve access to resources tailored to their needs and experiences. Their lives and well-being should not be treated as a political issue or subjected to an ideological agenda. Please prioritize evidence-based mental health support over discrimination and stand up for our most vulnerable young people. The stakes are far too high to neglect this population.
