Vote No on the SAVE Act
To: Sen. Peters
From: A constituent in Flint, MI
April 17, 2025
The so-called "Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act" is a deceptive piece of legislation that poses a direct and calculated assault on the fundamental right to vote. Disguised as a measure to ensure election integrity, this act is, in reality, a thinly veiled attempt to disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters.
Here's why this act is a dangerous attack on our democracy:
* Creates Unnecessary Barriers:
* The SAVE Act mandates that voters provide documentary proof of citizenship, such as birth certificates or passports, to register to vote. This creates an unnecessary hurdle, especially for those who lack easy access to these documents.
* This disproportionately affects marginalized communities, including voters of color, the elderly, low-income individuals, and those living in rural areas.
* Disenfranchises Millions:
* Millions of Americans do not possess the required documentation. This act will effectively deny them their constitutional right to vote.
* Specifically, the act creates new obstacles for people who have changed their name, like married women, and also for trans people.
* Undermines Existing Systems:
* Federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting. The SAVE Act creates redundant and burdensome requirements that serve no legitimate purpose.
* This act would also hinder or eliminate online and mail in voter registration.
* Imposes Burdens on Election Officials:
* This act would add a massive burden to state and local election officials, who are already underfunded and understaffed.
* Threatens Voter Roll Purges:
* The SAVE act also threatens to cause faulty voter roll purges, that would remove eligible voters from the voter roles.
This act is not about safeguarding elections; it's about suppressing votes. It's a calculated effort to manipulate the electoral process and silence the voices of American citizens.
