No autism registry

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Simon

From: A constituent in Oakland, CA

There is no need to waste government resources on a registry for autistic individuals. The administration's push to discover a 'cause' for autism is based in eugenics. We've seen this script before, in prewar Germany. What autistic people need is services and support, not a "cure." Autistic people are not damaged goods They are not sick. They are not inferior. They are not contagious. They are, however, subject to discrimination and stigma. This registry does nothing to help them. It reminds me of the AIDS registries proposed in the 1980s. They also proposed camps, an idea RFK Jr is reinvigorating as well. None of this helps autistic people, who are citizens with rights like any other. Measles is a much more imminent public health threat, along with bird flu, a COVID resurgence, and other transmittable diseases. Leave autistic people alone. Or, better, help them grow and thrive. But keep their names off a government registry.
