I am writing to urge you to unconditionally uphold the First Amendment by protecting the right of American citizens to discuss, organize around, and advocate for all peaceful political ideologies—including democratic socialism and communism.
Lately, campaign rhetoric has reached a dangerous tipping point, with public figures openly calling to criminalize ideas like socialism and communism. Using fear-mongering and distorted definitions to threaten the legal status of political thought is a direct assault on the core of American democracy.
The First Amendment does not pick and choose which peaceful ideas are allowed based on who is currently in power. If right-wing populist movements like MAGA have the absolute right to organize, speak, and use public platforms to voice their beliefs, then everyday Americans have that exact same right to discuss alternative economic and social systems. You cannot claim to defend American freedom while attempting to legally erase political viewpoints you happen to disagree with. Criminalizing an idea is the first step toward authoritarianism.
I demand that Congress publicly reject any unconstitutional attempts to criminalize, suppress, or penalize American citizens for their peaceful political affiliations or ideologies. Protect a truly open town square where debate and constitutional logic rule—not political intimidation.
