Pass a bill requiring police to identify themselves

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. Dingell

From: A verified voter in Ann Arbor, MI

June 14

The attack yesterday on two Democratic lawmakers by a person impersonating a police officer was a frightening act of political terrorism. The increasingly common practice of law enforcement officers (especially ICE officer) to conceal their identity by wearing irregular uniforms, masks and other removing or obscuring name tags and badges exacerbates this problem. Police are now advising residents in Minnesota to refuse to answer the door to people dressed as police! As an elected official myself I find this especially worrying. Please immediately begin working with your colleagues to draft a bill requiring on duty officers to display identifying information clearly and require providing identification in most circumstances with severe consequences. This ambiguity is further eroding public trust in law enforcement and tolerating this will only lead to more violence when people can no longer tell if a person in uniform is a cop or a terrorist dressed like cop.
