Ensure ethical cobalt mining for clean energy transition

To: Pres. Biden, Sen. Rosen, Sen. Cortez Masto, Rep. Amodei

From: A constituent in Reno, NV

July 26

The transition to renewable energy sources and electric vehicles is crucial for mitigating climate change, but it must not come at the expense of human rights abuses and environmental degradation. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) produces around 70% of the world's cobalt, a key mineral used in rechargeable batteries. However, a significant portion is mined under hazardous conditions by artisanal miners, including children, who often lack proper training, safety equipment, and fair wages. This unethical sourcing of cobalt is unacceptable and unsustainable. We urge immediate action to establish transparent and robust certification systems, formalize the artisanal mining sector, and enforce strict environmental and labor standards. Responsible mining practices, coupled with investments in recycling technologies and the development of alternative domestic cobalt sources, can help address supply constraints while upholding human rights and environmental protection. The energy transition must prioritize not only reducing emissions but also ensuring that the materials powering clean technologies are sourced ethically and sustainably. Corporations, governments, and consumers all have a role to play in demanding accountability and driving meaningful change in cobalt supply chains. The path to a greener future must be paved with ethical and responsible practices.
