Follow Justice Roberts — Defend Judicial Independence Now

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Casar

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

March 18

In 2018, Chief Justice John Roberts firmly rejected President Trump’s attempts to politicize the judiciary, stating, “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges.” Now, Roberts is once again sounding the alarm as Trump escalates his authoritarian behavior. Trump’s call to impeach Judge James Boasberg for issuing a lawful ruling on deportations is a direct attack on judicial independence. Roberts warned that impeachment is “not an appropriate response” to lawful judicial decisions. This is a dangerous moment for our democracy. The executive branch openly defies the rule of law, testing whether anyone will hold it accountable. As Republicans who claim to value the Constitution, you cannot remain on the sidelines while Trump assaults our checks and balances. Every day you stay silent, you embolden authoritarianism and weaken the very institutions that protect our republic. I am calling on you to act now—condemn these reckless attacks on our judiciary, protect the independence of the courts, and reaffirm your commitment to democracy. If the Chief Justice has the courage to stand up to Trump, so should you. History will not be kind to those who refused to defend the Constitution when it mattered most.
