It's time to repeal obscenity laws and fix the PROTECT Act of 2003.
To: Sen. Ossoff, Sen. Warnock
From: A constituent in Hinesville, GA
November 5
Obscenity laws and flawed provisions in the PROTECT Act of 2003 have resulted in the criminalization of fictional works that don't involve victims at all. Meanwhile, AI deepfakes involving real people continue to proliferate, using their likenesses to produce CSAM, CSEM, non-consensual material. Children, victims of stalking and abuse, victims of scams and blackmail, and people who have had their sensitive data stolen by AI, are in much more danger of being exploited. But obscenity laws and their supporters would rather punish sex workers, erotica creators, writers, artists, scientists, and advocates for civil rights and freedom of expression. They won't admit that the provisions targeting obscene speech have not protected children from harms being perpetuated in trusted communities, like religious organizations and schools. Obscenity laws are blank checks for unmitigated prosecution of book sellers and libraries, and have historically been used to censor books critical of slavery, racism, sexism, and of society as a whole. Please repeal these faulty laws and provisions.
