The House of Representatives should swiftly pass a clean continuing resolution to fund the government and avoid an unnecessary shutdown that would harm millions of Americans. Partisan brinkmanship over the debt ceiling is counterproductive and risks inflicting severe economic damage. Focus should remain on responsibly keeping the government operating while engaging in substantive negotiations over fiscal policies separately. A resolution maintaining existing spending levels temporarily allows time for reasoned debate on budgetary priorities without precipitating an immensely disruptive government closure. Fulfilling the basic duty of funding federal operations in a timely manner must take precedence over other controversial policy aims. I urge Congress to act promptly to approve a straightforward continuing resolution and prevent inflicting further chaos on the American people.
