I am writing to express my strong opposition to House Bill 4938, filed by Representative Pat Curry, which seeks to abolish the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). As a concerned constituent, I am deeply troubled by this proposal and urge you to stand against it.
Texas Parks and Wildlife has played a critical role in conserving our state’s natural resources, protecting wildlife habitats, and ensuring public access to our beautiful state parks. The department provides invaluable services through land stewardship, conservation efforts, and outdoor recreation opportunities that benefit millions of Texans each year. From promoting responsible hunting and fishing to preserving endangered species, TPWD has long upheld its mission of protecting Texas’ natural heritage.
The argument for eliminating TPWD, as mentioned in recent reports, appears to stem from dissatisfaction with certain administrative processes. While improvements and transparency are always welcome, dissolving the entire department is an extreme and destructive measure. Doing so would jeopardize the protection of Texas’ natural resources, undermine conservation efforts, and severely impact the outdoor recreation industry that generates significant economic activity in our state.
Furthermore, TPWD’s programs provide educational opportunities for children and families, foster environmental stewardship, and contribute to the well-being of our communities. Dismantling this agency would not only threaten these initiatives but also disrupt partnerships with local governments, conservation groups, and volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve Texas’ landscapes.
As your constituent, I urge you to oppose House Bill 4938 and instead advocate for constructive solutions that address any concerns with TPWD through dialogue, transparency, and oversight. Texas deserves a future where our parks and wildlife are protected for generations to come.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your continued support for the preservation of our state’s natural treasures.
