This is crazy!! It’s the fox guarding the henhouse! The Trump administration announced a major shift in how immigration enforcement incidents are investigated. Federal agents around the country were informed that the FBI will no longer investigate confrontations involving immigration agents. Instead, many of those cases will be handled by the Department of Homeland Security itself.
That matters because FBI investigations have uncovered evidence used in criminal or civil rights cases involving DHS personnel after violent encounters. Removing the FBI from these investigations reduces independent oversight and will lead to little or no accountability. The administration claims the change “streamlines investigations and places them with the agency responsible for immigration enforcement.” Having DHS investigate incidents involving its own personnel creates a major conflict of interest.
