Congress Must Restore Asylum and Refugee Aid Now

To: Sen. Hawley, Rep. Burlison, Sen. Schmitt

From: A constituent in Kirbyville, MO

November 5

America’s very soul is under attack. I am absolutely outraged, and you should be right alongside me. We are witnessing more than a shift in policy; we are enduring a deliberate campaign to dismantle the core identity of the United States—the identity of a nation built by and for the oppressed. To watch this administration systematically extinguish the promise of refuge is a profound and un-American betrayal. The evidence of this moral collapse is undeniable. The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), a decades-old infrastructure for global humanitarian leadership, has been choked to death. Setting the annual refugee admissions ceiling to the lowest point in history—7,500 people—is not just restrictive; it is an act of calculated cruelty, a formal declaration that we are abandoning the people our country was founded to protect. The executive branch is actively leveraging crisis-level rhetoric—declaring the border situation an "invasion"—to justify the widespread denial of due process. Reinstating policies like "Remain in Mexico," shutting down legal appointment portals, and expanding expedited removal across the interior of the country all serve one tyrannical purpose: to prevent the desperate from even seeking the asylum guaranteed by law. You, as members of Congress, possess the sovereign, constitutional authority over immigration. You are the only ones with the power to write the law, and you cannot stand by while this administration uses executive action to tear the existing laws and norms apart. You swore an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect the values of this republic. You must use the power of the purse and the full weight of legislative oversight to halt the funding of these morally bankrupt policies, restore the USRAP to meaningful levels, and ensure that due process for asylum seekers is secured. Reclaim our nation's moral standing. Fight this abandonment of our principles now, before it’s too late.
