I am writing to express my deep concern over President Trump's threat to declare a national emergency and federalize Washington, D.C.'s police force, as well as the recent deployment of over 2,000 National Guard troops to the city. These actions represent a dangerous overreach of federal power and a threat to local autonomy. The President's threat comes in response to Mayor Muriel Bowser's decision to limit cooperation between D.C. police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This is a local policy decision that should be respected, not met with threats of federal intervention. The use of military force in our nation's capital sets a troubling precedent for federal interference in local law enforcement matters. It's crucial to note that President Trump's previous takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department lasted for 30 days and has only recently expired. While the President claims this intervention led to a decrease in crime rates, it's important to scrutinize these claims and consider the long-term implications of such federal actions on local governance and community trust. The deployment of National Guard troops in response to a policy disagreement is an extreme and disproportionate measure. It undermines the principles of federalism and local control that are fundamental to our democratic system. This militarization of our cities in response to policy disputes sets a dangerous precedent that could be used to suppress dissent and override local democratic decisions. I urge you to take immediate action to prevent this federal overreach. Please work to block any attempts to declare a national emergency for this purpose, and call for the immediate withdrawal of National Guard troops from Washington, D.C. It's crucial that we protect the autonomy of local governments and resist the use of military force as a tool for federal policy enforcement. The residents of Washington, D.C., like all Americans, deserve to have their locally elected officials make decisions about law enforcement policies without the threat of military intervention. I ask that you speak out against these actions and work with your colleagues to safeguard the principles of local governance and civilian law enforcement.
