Investigate ICE's Killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and End These Operations
Demand an independent investigation into the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, the father of three who was shot by ICE agents in Houston after they ran his plates during a surveillance operation he had nothing to do with. The agents wore no body cameras. Three eyewitnesses directly contradict DHS's claim that he tried to use his vehicle as a weapon. He died hours later. That is not law enforcement — that is an execution with no accountability.
This is not an isolated incident. Federal agents have shot at more than 20 people since September, nearly all in their cars. Mexico's government has filed at least a dozen investigation requests and raised the deaths of 17 Mexican nationals with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Meanwhile, ICE is arresting roughly 2,000 people a day, sweeping up workers at traffic stops, courthouses, and check-ins across the country. Communities from Chicago to Puerto Rico are reporting increasingly aggressive tactics with zero transparency.
Congress funded $31 billion for these operations. You have both the authority and the responsibility to demand answers. Hold hearings. Require body cameras. Establish binding use-of-force guidelines. The people carrying out these operations are doing so, by design, out of public view. That has to stop.
