Reject Erosion of Civil Liberties, Pursue Balanced Measures
To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer
From: A constituent in Rensselaer, NY
November 23
This bill risks undermining many non-profit organizations that provide vital assistance and resources to communities in need. The overly broad criteria of "material support" could be applied to humanitarian groups working in conflict zones or those advocating for controversial causes. Terminating their tax-exempt status would cripple their ability to carry out important charitable, educational, and advocacy work. While we must combat terror financing, this legislation takes an indiscriminate approach that jeopardizes civil society organizations serving the public good. A more judicious balance should be struck to address legitimate security concerns without hampering the invaluable community services provided by non-profits.
