I’m writing to urge you to vote NO on the so-called “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” (SAVE) Act. While protecting election integrity is important, this bill imposes harmful, unnecessary barriers that would disenfranchise eligible voters—especially women and adopted individuals.
Requiring documentary proof of citizenship may sound simple on paper, but in practice, it creates enormous obstacles for everyday Americans. Women who have changed their names through marriage or divorce often face complications in matching current IDs to older documents, and adopted individuals may not have access to original birth certificates at all. These are not rare exceptions—they represent a significant portion of the voting population.
This bill would make it harder for naturalized citizens, low-income families, rural voters, and marginalized communities to register and vote. All this, despite the fact that there is no widespread evidence of noncitizens voting in federal elections. Our current systems already verify voter eligibility effectively.
The SAVE Act does not protect democracy—it restricts it. I urge you to oppose this legislation and instead support measures that make voting more accessible and secure for all Americans.
