Reject Bill Undermining Nonprofits' Freedom to Operate

To: Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth

From: A verified voter in Chicago, IL

November 21

The proposed H.R. 9495 bill poses a grave threat to free speech and the ability of non-profit organizations to operate freely. This bill would grant the Treasury Secretary sweeping powers to effectively shut down any non-profit entity, including news outlets, religious institutions, universities, and humanitarian organizations like Oxfam. Such unchecked authority to silence dissent and criticism is deeply concerning and unacceptable in a democratic society. Passing this legislation would have far-reaching implications, jeopardizing the crucial work of non-profits in providing aid, advocating for human rights, and holding those in power accountable. It would enable the administration to target and suppress organizations based on their views or activities, ultimately stifling the open exchange of ideas and curtailing civil liberties. We must safeguard the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution, including freedom of speech and freedom of association. H.R. 9495 represents a direct assault on these core values and threatens to undermine the vital role non-profits play in our society. For the preservation of our democratic principles and the protection of essential humanitarian operations, this bill must be rejected.
