Oppose Trump’s Next Attorney General Pick, End The Weaponization of the DoJ

To: Sen. Warren, Sen. Markey

From: A constituent in Newton, MA

April 2

While Pam Bondi’s removal as Attorney General was long overdue, the misconduct and misuse of resources at the Justice Department will continue unabated unless someone steps up to stop them. Please oppose any Trump nominee to replace her until you can assure the DoJ will return to impartially serving the American people instead of being used as a cudgel against the president’s enemies and a shield for his friends. Bondi’s tenure has been marked by cover-ups and abuse of power: ·       She has repeatedly been caught attempting to protect the President from exposure of his relationship with sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. She has failed to prosecute anyone else involved in Epstein’s crimes, in spite of her promises of justice for the survivors. ·       She has used her office to seek retribution against the White House’s perceived political enemies with nonsense cases. Federal judges have criticized the brazenness of her trumped-up charges, and grand juries who would indict a ham sandwich have rebuked her attempts to seek indictments. ·       Her attorneys have ignored court orders and lied to judges where following the rules might slow progress on the President’s priorities, to the point where the presumption that federal prosecutors are acting in good faith is being diminished. ·       Her department has been so consumed with going after immigrants, protesters and Trump’s enemies list that they have neglected basic responsibilities. They’ve dropped 23,000 criminal cases, including terrorism and serious white-collar crimes, and let off the hook numerous allies and associates of the President suspected of serious wrongdoing. This all represents a dangerous weaponization of federal law enforcement and a betrayal of public trust. But the thread that runs through it is not the interests of Pam Bondi, and responsibility clearly does not stop at her door. Bondi has perverted the purpose of the Justice Department because that is what President Trump wants, and it would be naïve to believe his next attorney general will be any different. Early reports indicate Bondi’s termination was, in fact, the result of Trump’s frustration that she has not been aggressive enough in imprisoning his foes. Her rumored successor, Lee Zeldin, has nearly abandoned enforcement of environmental law altogether as head of the EPA and endorsed prosecution of a former deputy director of the FBI for investigating allegations against Trump. We can assume the DoJ under him would similarly let corporations and billionaires run wild while seeking to criminalize disagreeing with the White House. What we’ve seen at the Justice Department since January 2025 is the stuff of kings and tinpot dictators. It undermines law and order, disrespects our constitutional values and reinforces every fear regular Americans have of a two-tiered justice system. Nothing will change if Congress will not exercise its authority to rein them in. Do not rubber stamp Bondi’s replacement as if it’s business as usual.
