Oppose the CHATBOT Act. This bill doesn't protect kids — it mandates a one-size-fits-all federal surveillance system for every AI company, treating a 17-year-old the same as a 7-year-old and forcing families through a government-prescribed consent process before a teenager can use an AI tool for homework or research. The bill's required "family accounts" — with full conversation logs and monitoring tools — will create massive, centralized archives of teenagers' most personal exchanges. Those archives will be targets for hackers, identity thieves, and civil litigants. Congress is requiring this data to exist while doing nothing to protect it. And by conditioning access on knowing a user's age, the bill will pressure AI companies into age verification schemes — facial scans, government ID checks — that collect far more information than any family should have to hand over just to use a chatbot. The FTC already has authority to enforce COPPA, investigate AI companies, and crack down on deceptive products marketed to kids. That inquiry is already underway. Let it finish. Use existing tools before locking a single federal parenting model into law.
