I am writing to express my deep concern about the recent decision by the Trump administration to halt a grant that would have brought much-needed AmeriCorps support to senior services in Albuquerque, as reported by Mayor Tim Keller. This action directly impacts vulnerable homebound seniors and multigenerational families who rely on these services for essential support like yard cleanup, accessibility repairs, and mitigating fire risks.
The loss of seven AmeriCorps NCCC members, who were scheduled to work with the City’s Departments of Senior Affairs and Parks and Recreation, is a significant blow to Albuquerque’s ability to care for its senior population. These volunteers would have provided critical assistance with safety repairs and code violations, helping hundreds of seniors maintain their homes and live with dignity. The value of their work far outweighed the modest federal investment of a living allowance.
I urge you to investigate this matter and advocate for the reinstatement of this vital funding. Seniors in Albuquerque, and across the country, deserve to live in safety and dignity. Halting programs that directly support their well-being is unacceptable.
