Defend our rights and defund ICE
To: Rep. Kiley, Sen. Schiff, Pres. Trump, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Auburn, CA
January 14
I am writing as your constituent to express my deep concern about recent actions taken by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies under the current administration. The killing of Renee Nicole Good—a 37-year-old U.S. citizen who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026—has devastated her family and community and raised serious questions about federal use of force and accountability. In the days since Ms. Good’s death, there have been numerous protests and demonstrations across Minneapolis and other cities. Federal agents, including ICE personnel, have been involved in confrontations with demonstrators, and multiple arrests have been reported as tensions escalate. As a nation that values the rule of law and the protection of civil rights, we should be able to expect federal agencies to operate transparently, responsibly, and with full accountability—especially when the actions of those agencies result in the death of a U.S. citizen. Instead, federal leadership has defended the actions of the agent involved, and local and state officials have raised serious concerns about cooperation and oversight. Given these events and the broader pattern of aggressive enforcement tactics, I urge you to support legislation and appropriations measures that will: 1. Defund or significantly restrict funding for ICE, reallocating resources to community-based immigration and humanitarian support services. 2. Increase independent oversight of federal immigration enforcement, including mandatory body cameras, clear identification of agents in the field, and transparent investigative processes. 3. Hold federal officers accountable when their actions result in civilian death or harm, ensuring that investigations are impartial and not controlled exclusively by the agency involved. 4. Protect the civil liberties of all residents, including the right to peaceful protest without fear of militarized retaliation. Our country must not tolerate unchecked power wielded by unaccountable agencies, especially when that power can—and has—resulted in the loss of innocent life and the erosion of constitutional rights. I respectfully ask that you stand with your constituents in calling for meaningful reforms and accountability. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical issue.
