I am writing to express my deep alarm regarding recent testimony given by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth during a congressional hearing on June 18, 2025.
When directly asked by Senator Elissa Slotkin whether he had ever ordered the military to fire on unarmed civilians—or if he would follow such an order from former President Trump—Hegseth did not answer with the only acceptable and humane response: “No. Never. Absolutely not.” Instead, he laughed. And when pressed further, he mocked the question, deflecting with the line, “Be careful what you read in books—unless it’s the Bible.”
This is not a small matter. In a constitutional democracy, the idea of ordering military force against unarmed Americans is not only reprehensible—it is unlawful and authoritarian. Hegseth’s refusal to clearly reject such actions signals a chilling comfort with the erosion of the rule of law and the use of violence as a political tool. His response suggests either complicity or indifference to the very real danger of turning our military inward on our own citizens.
It is also essential to underscore that this exchange was in reference to documented claims in former Secretary Mark Esper’s book, alleging that President Trump expressed a desire to shoot protesters during the George Floyd demonstrations. This is not hearsay—it’s a credible, published account from someone who served at the highest levels of the Department of Defense.
These are not the actions or words of public servants committed to liberty, justice, or civilian safety. These are the words of men who seem to believe power should go unchecked—even if it means turning American troops on the American people.
I urge you to speak out and act decisively:
Demand clear accountability for Hegseth’s alarming testimony.
Oppose any future appointments or powers granted to individuals who refuse to uphold civilian protections and constitutional restraint.
Support legislation that ensures no president can order military force against peaceful protesters without severe legal consequences.
We must reject authoritarian impulses—no matter who espouses them. We are at a moment in history where silence and complicity will be remembered. I hope you choose action.
