FBI director must submit legally required budget promptly

The FBI director's lack of preparedness for the budget hearing and admitted failure to submit the legally required FY2026 budget request is highly concerning. Public trust in the FBI depends on leadership following proper procedures and being transparent with Congress about operations and resource needs. While understandable that assembling a full budget may involve coordination across agencies, showing up empty-handed demonstrates an unacceptable disregard for the oversight role of Congress. I urge you to use your authority on the Appropriations Committee to demand the FBI director immediately prioritize completing and delivering a comprehensive budget proposal, as required by law. Allowing this lapse to go unaddressed would set a dangerous precedent undermining accountability. The FBI deserves leadership that respects the institution and Congress' constitutional duties. A thorough budget request is vital for making informed funding decisions supporting the Bureau's vital work. The director must provide this without further delay.
