Urgent Action Needed to Prevent SNAP Benefit Lapse

To: Sen. Blackburn, Sen. Hagerty, Rep. DesJarlais

From: A verified voter in Rockvale, TN

November 5

The impending government shutdown threatens to cut off vital SNAP benefits to 42 million Americans on November 1st. This is not just a number—it represents families, children, and vulnerable individuals who rely on an average of $187 per month to put food on their tables. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to ensure uninterrupted funding for SNAP. The USDA has stated that no benefits will be issued come November 1st if a solution isn't found. While existing funds on EBT cards can still be used, this is a short-term bandaid for a potentially long-term problem. The impact of this lapse would be devastating, placing an enormous strain on food banks and social services that are already stretched thin. Several states are taking emergency measures to support their residents. Louisiana has declared an emergency to fund benefits, Vermont has approved a plan to cover benefits through November 15th, and California is deploying its National Guard to assist food banks while providing $80 million in funding. New York is contributing $30 million to support 16 million meals. However, the USDA warns that states lack the authority to cover these benefits and won't be reimbursed for their efforts. We cannot allow a government shutdown to jeopardize the food security of millions of Americans. While two federal judges have ruled that the administration must use contingency funds for at least partial SNAP benefits, this is not a guaranteed or comprehensive solution. We need decisive action from Congress to ensure full funding for SNAP benefits. I implore you to prioritize this issue in budget negotiations. Push for a resolution that guarantees uninterrupted SNAP funding. The consequences of inaction are too severe—increased hunger, greater pressure on local charities, and potential long-term health impacts on our most vulnerable citizens. Time is of the essence. Please act now to protect the basic needs of your constituents and all Americans who depend on this crucial program.
