Please keep defending Congress’s war powers

To: Rep. Jayapal, Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell

January 8

I’m writing with deep concern about the Trump administration’s escalating actions in Venezuela. The use of military force and seizure of control—without congressional authorization or a clear plan for transition—represents a grave threat to our Constitution and to global stability. Your constituents do not want another endless war. We do not want U.S. servicemembers or civilians placed in harm’s way to serve an authoritarian agenda or the interests of powerful industries. War powers belong to Congress, and allowing any president to bypass that authority endangers democracy itself. I know you already understand what’s at stake, and I’m grateful for the clarity and courage you’ve shown in pushing back against these abuses of power. Please know that many of us are standing with you and are counting on Congress to continue asserting its constitutional role—firmly and without compromise. Thank you for your leadership, your persistence, and your willingness to keep fighting for democratic accountability during this terrifying moment.
