I am writing as a deeply concerned Texas resident to strongly oppose the newly proposed congressional redistricting plan unveiled by Texas Republican lawmakers. This plan, as reported by The Texas Tribune and other reputable sources, seeks to redraw district lines in order to flip five Democratic seats into Republican hands in the next election cycle, most notably targeting districts in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and South Texas.
The proposed redistricting is an unprecedented, mid-decade maneuver pursued not out of necessity, but as a partisan effort pushed by national and state party leaders. Public reporting clearly indicates that this redrawing is intended to artificially bolster Republican congressional presence, with lines specifically tailored so that 30 of 38 districts would have favored Donald Trump by at least 10 percentage points if the proposed map had been in place for the last election. Such manipulation disregards the actual demographic and political diversity of our state, disenfranchising Texas voters and diluting fair representation.
Several points of objection demand your attention:
This redistricting attempt circumvents traditional census timelines and erodes public trust by being initiated mid-decade, outside of established practice.
The map intentionally dismantles districts currently represented by minority and Democratic officials, further suppressing the voices of communities that are already underrepresented.
There is a clear perception, both statewide and nationally, that this is a raw power grab driven by partisan self-interest rather than the needs or will of the people of Texas.
By prioritizing political gains over pressing state concerns—such as disaster relief, healthcare access, education, and infrastructure—our leaders fail to address the urgent needs of everyday Texans.
I urge you in the strongest possible terms: reject this proposed map and recommit to a redistricting process that honors the principles of representative democracy, respects the integrity of our diverse communities, and ensures every Texan’s vote counts equally.
The people of Texas deserve fair maps and a government that reflects, not manipulates, their will.
