Vote NO: Protect the Freedom to Vote

To: Sen. Blackburn, Rep. Van Epps, Sen. Hagerty

From: A constituent in Clarksville, TN

March 17

Dear Senator/Representative, I’m writing to urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, or any similar legislation that would restrict Americans’ freedom to vote. Despite the names, these bills have nothing to do with protecting elections. They create new barriers that would make it harder for eligible Americans to register and participate in our democracy. These proposals would require voters to show in-person proof of citizenship—like a passport or original birth certificate—just to register or update their voter registration. Millions of Americans don’t have easy access to those documents. That means seniors, military families, rural residents, tribal citizens, and married women who have changed their names could face unnecessary hurdles just to exercise a basic right. They would also effectively eliminate online and mail voter registration, forcing people to register in person regardless of their circumstances. That doesn’t strengthen democracy—it shuts people out of it. Let’s be clear: it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal or state elections, and states already verify voter eligibility. These bills do nothing to improve election security. What they do is make it harder for eligible Americans to vote. The right to vote is fundamental to our freedom as Americans. Laws should protect that right—not chip away at it. I urge you to vote NO on any legislation that would make it harder for eligible Americans to participate in our democracy.
