Scott Dworkin reports that
Last week, every Republican running for the Senate had to turn in their newest campaign money report. Most people stop at the totals. I investigate the names.
Mike Rogers’ report alone runs more than 40,000 lines, with more than 13,000 donors on it. Most of the names are exactly what you’d expect: retirees, doctors, car dealers, lawyers. Then one name stood out: a $3,500 check from a man Trump pardoned.
A name isn’t proof, so I ran it down. I checked the info listed with his donation against state business records. It’s him.
Here’s what he did. He raised millions for Trump’s first campaign. Then he pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to secretly lobby the Trump administration for foreign interests. Part of what he admitted: after meeting a senior Chinese government minister, he sent a memo meant for the attorney general carrying a request from the Chinese government. As part of a plea deal, he forfeited millions of dollars. Then, on his way out the door, Trump pardoned him.
Now look at who he’s paying. Mike Rogers is the Republican running for Senate in Michigan. He used to run the House Intelligence Committee, and he’s built his whole career on being tough on China. At the Republican convention, he said you can’t build an electric car “without getting into bed with the Communist Party of China.”
Rogers’ own report shows the check. Through the end of September, it shows the money was never sent back.
