Protect state laws on animal welfare and ethical farming

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet, Pres. Biden, Rep. Crow

From: A constituent in Aurora, CO

May 28

The proposed Farm Bill provision undermines state authority to enact animal welfare laws that reflect the values of their citizens. It would invalidate not just Proposition 12 in California, but also hundreds of other state laws regulating product sales, disease control, toxic materials, and more – a massive overreach of federal power. This measure ignores the will of voters, with nearly 80% supporting farm animal protection laws in their states across party lines. Moreover, it harms farmers who have invested to meet the demand for more humanely raised products. I urge you to stand against this attack on state laws by opposing any language in the Farm Bill that nullifies Proposition 12 and other animal protection measures. Upholding such reasonable laws preserves states' rights and supports a food system aligned with ethical practices.
