The First Amendment applies to everyone in the USA: citizens and non-citizens alike. It is beyond horrifying to see that graduate students and professors can be abducted, detained, removed by extra procedural rendition for their political opinions. Once 1A rights are ignored and due process is discarded for anyone, no one is safe. Habeas corpus is also a fundamental right, guaranteed by the constitution, predating even the Magna Carta. The crackdown on foreign students' freedom of thought and opinion is clearly intended to have a chilling effect on us all.
The Trump administration's wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident with legal protected status, to the notoriously abusive CECOT prison in El Salvador is a grave injustice. Despite acknowledging this egregious error, the administration claims it lacks the ability to secure Garcia's return from Salvadoran custody. This stance is unacceptable. The U.S. government has a moral and legal obligation to rectify this injustice swiftly. Moreover, credible reports suggest other innocent individuals may also be unjustly imprisoned at CECOT under the guise of targeting gang members. The administration must urgently investigate these cases and expedite the release and repatriation of any wrongfully detained persons. Failure to take immediate corrective action would constitute a shameful dereliction of duty and a violation of human rights. The request is clear - mobilize all available diplomatic channels and resources to secure the unconditional release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and any other unlawfully incarcerated individuals from the brutal conditions at CECOT.
Continued inaction is inexcusable when the freedom and well-being of U.S. nationals and innocent people are at stake. The constitution (which you have sworn to defend and uphold) gives the right of Habeas corpus to citizens, non-citizens, green card holders, innocent people and criminals. When Habeas corpus is ignored for one person, no one is safe. Decisive action to right these wrongs is imperative.
