Let’s be clear: capping federal loans at $50,000 for undergraduates and $100,000 for graduate students, eliminating subsidized loans, and killing off income-driven repayment plans like SAVE will throw millions into financial precarity. These aren’t theoretical consequences, they’re real-world setbacks for people like me who pursued education in good faith under an entirely different system. This bill guts the social contract. I make over $150,000, and I still can’t afford to pay 10% of my income toward student loans while also covering the inflated cost of living in New York, rising property taxes, and housing expenses. If this passes, the message is simple: if you didn’t come from money, you shouldn’t have gone to school. Let’s also talk about the economic impact: this bill will depress consumer spending, widen the racial wealth gap, and spike default rates. Working professionals will be forced to delay homeownership, business formation, and even starting families. All so the federal government can shift the burden onto everyday borrowers while corporations and private schools are left untouched.
