Moratorium on Data Centers

To: Sen. Bennett, Gov. Reynolds, Rep. Cooling

From: A constituent in Cedar Rapids, IA

May 25

Iowa’s environment and water quality are at a breaking point. We can’t afford to give another corporate taxpayer handout to out-of-state Big Tech oligarchs that have the potential to further pollute our state’s water and increase health problems across Iowa. We are calling on our state's elected officials to: 1. Enact an immediate statewide moratorium on all new AI data center construction until comprehensive environmental impact assessments are completed.
2. Prohibit rezoning of farmland for data center construction — Iowa’s agricultural land must be protected from industrial tech sprawl.
3. Require full water impact studies before any data center is permitted, with binding limits on water withdrawal from Iowa’s waterways and aquifers.
4. End taxpayer subsidies and corporate tax breaks for trillion-dollar tech companies building in Iowa at the expense of our communities.
5. Hold transparent public hearings in affected communities before any future data center projects are approved.
