I am writing as a constituent from Dyer County, Tennessee, to urge you to vote NO on the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill," particularly due to its cruel and unnecessary cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). These changes will harm millions of low-income Americans, including many right here in our community, and I implore you to reject this attack on the most vulnerable.
1. SNAP Cuts Will Deepen Poverty & Hunger
- The bill’s requirement for states to contribute more to SNAP—especially those with higher error rates—is a backdoor way to slash benefits. States like Tennessee, already struggling with underfunded social services, will likely reduce eligibility or benefits rather than pay more. This means children, seniors, and working families will go hungry.
- Dyer County has a poverty rate of 17.9%, and SNAP is a lifeline for thousands here. Cutting it will force families to choose between rent, medicine, and food.
- Error rates do not equal fraud—they often reflect bureaucratic complexities. Punishing states for administrative challenges is heartless.
2. Work Requirements Are Cruel
The bill’s new work requirements for "able-bodied" SNAP recipients ignore economic reality. Many in rural Tennessee lack reliable jobs, transportation, or childcare. These rules won’t "encourage work"—they’ll kick people off benefits for failing to navigate impossible hurdles.
- SNAP already has work requirements. Adding more is about pushing people off rolls, not "helping" them.
- Hunger doesn’t motivate—it demoralizes. How can someone find a job if they’re malnourished?
3. This Bill Prioritizes Profit Over People
This legislation isn’t "fiscal responsibility"—it’s ideological cruelty. While corporations get tax breaks and politicians waste billions on militarism, this bill targets the poor to fund handouts for the wealthy.
- Solidarity demands shared abundance. Food is a HUMAN RIGHT, not a privilege for those who "earn" it.
- Tennessee’s representatives should fight for working people, not billionaire-backed austerity.
My Demand: Vote NO & Protect SNAP
I urge you to:
1. Reject the "Big Beautiful Bill" in its current form.
2. Fight to expand SNAP, not cut it.
3. Invest in real solutions: living wages, affordable housing, and healthcare, not more barriers for people experiencing poverty.
I will be watching your vote closely.
