Protecting Trans Healthcare in Trump's bill S. 1
To: Sen. Markey, Sen. Warren
From: A constituent in Florence, MA
June 9
I'm a western mass constituent writing in reference to the "BBB" or S 1. There are many problems with this bill as I'm sure you know. I am addressing the options that deal with transgender health care. The original bill in the house removed trans Healthcare for minors from medicaid coverage, but one amendment changed this to all people, including adults. We all know that trans miinors have been targeted heavily by maga..If this cannot be removed completely we need to at least rolll it back to affecting minors only. Trans adults are a vulnerable population, often underemployed or suffering from disabilities, and many of them are in medicaid. Hormonal care is literally a lifeline for them, and many people will not be able to afford it without medicaid. Another part of this bill forces the recognition of only 2 biological genders for the purposes of ACA. I am including some information from chat gpt on trans healthcare in this bill. Thank you for reading. 🏛 1. Ban on Federal Funding for Gender‑Affirming Care A late manager's amendment expanded the ban to all ages: The bill prohibits federal Medicaid and CHIP funds (and ACA essential‑benefits coverage starting in 2027) for gender-affirming care—including hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and surgeries—for both minors and adults . It also removes “gender transition procedures” from being considered Essential Health Benefits under the ACA, meaning insurers aren’t required to cover them beginning in 2027 . 2. Redefining “Sex” in Healthcare Policy A provision codifies a strict biological definition of sex under the ACA, with potential effects on intersex and transgender individuals in terms of legal recognition and access to services . 3. Broader Anti‑Trans Executive Orders Referenced: Executive Order 14168 (January 20, 2025) revoked federal recognition of gender identity, barred gender‑affirming care, and required all agencies to replace "gender" with "sex" in official materials . Executive Order 14187 (January 28, 2025) banned federal funding for minors’ gender‑affirming care. ⚠️ Impact on Transgender People (Adult & Minor) Approximately 180,000–185,000 transgender adults rely on Medicaid for gender‑affirming care . Trans youth lose access to puberty blockers, hormones, and related care under current federal healthcare Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” explicitly and aggressively targets transgender healthcare by: 1. Cutting federal funding for all gender-affirming care, at all ages. 2. Removing protections via Essential Health Benefits, potentially shifting cost burdens onto individuals or states. 3. Reinforcing these actions via executive orders that further restrict recognition, funding, and access for trans individuals.
