I am writing to you today as a concerned constituent to express my outrage regarding the recent military actions taken against Iran. This escalation is a dangerous provocation that threatens to plunge the United States into yet another unlawful, unauthorized war in the Middle East.
For too long, Congress has allowed the executive branch to erode the War Powers Resolution and bypass the constitutional requirement that only the legislative branch has the power to declare war. By failing to assert your authority, you are allowing this President to gamble with the lives of our service members and global stability.
I am calling on you to:
1 Publicly denounce these unilateral strikes.
2 Invoke the War Powers Resolution to force a withdrawal of forces from unauthorized hostilities.
3 Use the power of the purse to block any funding for offensive military operations against Iran that have not been explicitly debated and authorized by Congress.
The "cowardice" of legislative silence is no longer an option. You are an equal branch of government. I expect you to act as one before more lives are lost in a conflict we cannot afford and did not vote for.
Sincerely,
