It is deeply concerning that Rep. Andy Ogles has called for the denaturalization and deportation of mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani based on his religious and political beliefs. This blatant discrimination and attempt to interfere in a democratic election process is unacceptable. Ogles' hateful rhetoric towards Mamdani, including invoking an offensive nickname referring to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, perpetuates dangerous stereotypes and fuels Islamophobia. His allegations about Mamdani's past statements expressing solidarity with Palestinian causes do not justify revoking his citizenship or deporting him from the country he calls home. While freedom of speech protects offensive speech, Ogles' inflammatory comments cross a line by directly attacking an individual's right to fully participate in the political process based on their identity and beliefs. This undermines American values of diversity, inclusion and the right of citizens to run for office regardless of their backgrounds. As a elected representative, Ogles has a responsibility to serve all constituents equally and uphold democratic principles, not target individuals based on their race, religion or political views. I urge you to condemn his hateful rhetoric and attempts to improperly influence the New York City mayoral election through authoritarian means like denaturalization. We must stand firm against discrimination and protect the integrity of our elections. A pattern of the government trying to silence critical views and deport dissenting voices would deal a devastating blow to America's standing as a free society. I hope you will take a principled stance against Ogles' alarming statements and actions to preserve our cherished freedoms and democratic institutions.
