An Open Letter
To: Gov. Shapiro
From: A constituent in Havertown, PA
February 3
I have received a fundraising appeal from the Shapiro campaign yet I have not, to date, received any response from the Shapiro administration about my communications about ICE.
I am a Dem in Havertown and am appalled beyond words at the illegality, and yes, evil of ICE agents and their leaders. I have expressed my views to you in the recent past along with Rep Scanlon and others. Today I read in the Inquirer that your “administration honors some ICE detainers in state prisons and provides ICE with access to state databases that include personal identifying information for immigrants.” I am disappointed that you are speaking out only after it’s clear the popular will has turned, and disappointed that you haven’t ended all collaboration with ICE, full stop.
I believe there is only one moral stance on this issue and that is absolute. When paramilitary, masked thugs are trampling on our Amendment 1, 2, and 4 rights with impunity and their leaders tell lies, there isn’t a nice middle ground politicians can occupy. We all need to identify fascism and fight against it. I am disappointed in your reluctance to stand up for our democracy, and hope you have the courage in the future to do better.
