Oppose Unauthorized Military Action Against Iran
To: Pres. Trump, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Kiley, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Auburn, CA
February 28
I am writing to express my profound outrage and alarm at President Donald Trump’s decision to launch military strikes against Iran in coordination with Israel without congressional authorization or the consent of the American people. Multiple reports confirm that the United States has initiated major combat operations against Iran, dramatically escalating conflict in the Middle East and placing American service members and civilians at risk of retaliation and regional war. The Constitution is explicit: Congress, not the president, holds the sole authority to declare war. Yet once again, this administration has bypassed Congress and unilaterally committed the United States to armed conflict. Lawmakers from both parties have already warned that military action against Iran without authorization raises serious constitutional and legal concerns and have moved to force a War Powers vote in response. This is not a procedural disagreement. It is a direct assault on the system of checks and balances that protects our democracy from executive overreach. No president should be permitted to drag the nation into war through unilateral action. When a president repeatedly ignores constitutional limits, Congress has both the authority and the obligation to act decisively. Allowing this abuse of power to continue sets a dangerous precedent that undermines democratic governance and risks endless war without accountability. Impeachment alone is no longer sufficient if it fails to stop ongoing unconstitutional conduct. Congress must use every legal and constitutional mechanism available to halt unauthorized military action and remove a president who has demonstrated a willingness to wage war without lawful authority. The American people are exhausted by unchecked executive power, endless conflict, and decisions that place lives at risk without democratic consent. We expect our elected representatives to defend the Constitution, not defer to its violation. I urge you to: • Support and advance War Powers legislation to immediately end unauthorized military operations against Iran. • Publicly oppose unilateral presidential war-making. • Take all necessary constitutional steps to hold the president accountable and protect the rule of law. History will judge whether Congress defended its constitutional responsibility or surrendered it. I ask you to stand with the Constitution and with the American people.
