The SAVE Act is a deeply concerning threat to the freedom and integrity of our elections. This legislation would impose onerous voter ID requirements, making it significantly more difficult for many eligible citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Numerous studies have shown that strict voter ID laws disproportionately disenfranchise Black, Latino, Native American, low-income, elderly, and student voters. Moreover, the SAVE Act goes even further by mandating proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. This provision would bar millions of eligible voters who lack certain documents from participating in the democratic process. Voter impersonation fraud is statistically negligible and does not warrant such an extreme and undemocratic measure. Our elections should be free, fair, and accessible to all eligible voters. Legislators must reject the SAVE Act and any similar efforts to erect unnecessary barriers to the ballot box. I urge you to stand firm against this assault on voting rights and protect the fundamental pillars of our democracy.
