I'm writing as a constituent in Snellville and as an emergency physician who has spent about twenty years working in Georgia ERs. Congratulations on a strong election night for Democrats. I'm writing because the decisions the caucus makes in the next few weeks will shape what that win means, and I'm asking you to vote for new leadership. Please do not support Senator Schumer for another term as Democratic leader.
This isn't personal. Senator Schumer has served a long time and has won and lost majorities. But voters did not just send Democrats back to Washington to keep doing things the old way. Many of the senators-elect who campaigned on new leadership won, and I think they heard something real from voters. People want leaders who fight clearly for working families, explain plainly what they stand for, and don't fold in big negotiations.
I would ask you to support Senator Elizabeth Warren or Senator Cory Booker for leader. Senator Warren has spent her career taking on concentrated corporate power and explaining complicated economic issues in terms ordinary people understand. Senator Booker is one of the party's strongest communicators and has shown he can hold the floor and keep national attention on the issues that matter. Either one would give the caucus a public voice that matches the moment.
In my job I see every day what happens when people can't afford care, put off treatment, or fall through the gaps in the system. The next Senate majority will decide a lot about health care costs, coverage, and the cost of living. I want the person leading that majority to be someone who will push hard for those families, not someone voters already see as part of the problem.
At a minimum, I ask that you support a contested, open leadership election rather than a cleared field. I would also appreciate knowing where you stand on this question.
Thank you for your service to Georgia.
