Oppose the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act

Vote no on the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act introduced by Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Harriet Hageman. This bill would grant the fossil fuel industry sweeping immunity from climate lawsuits, dismiss all pending cases, and overturn state polluter pays laws. It's a shameless attempt to let Big Oil escape accountability for the climate crisis they created and profited from. Communities across the country are already paying billions for climate damage through higher insurance premiums, disaster recovery costs, and crumbling infrastructure. Meanwhile, the fossil fuel industry enjoys over $700 billion per year in pollution subsidies and now wants complete immunity from civil law. That's not how our legal system works. When an industry causes harm, victims have the right to seek justice in court. Dozens of states and municipalities have filed climate accountability lawsuits, and several are approaching trial. States like Vermont and New York passed climate superfund laws to make polluters pay their fair share. This bill would wipe out all of that progress and strip states of their authority to protect residents. Big Oil should pay for the damage they caused, not get a get out of jail free card. Reject this special interest giveaway and stand with communities demanding accountability.
