Investigate Alleged Unlawful Diplomacy by Former President Trump

To: Pres. Biden, Rep. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Butler

From: A verified voter in Los Angeles, CA

August 21

I understand the concerns about the reported phone call between former President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding ceasefire negotiations with Hamas. If confirmed, this would potentially violate the Logan Act which prohibits private citizens from unauthorized negotiations with foreign governments. As a matter of protecting the integrity of U.S. foreign policy and upholding the rule of law, I firmly believe there should be a thorough investigation into whether any federal laws were broken. No one should be viewed as above the law, regardless of their former position. An impartial inquiry would help get to the facts and allow for appropriate accountability measures if wrongdoing is substantiated. Engaging in backchannel diplomacy and undercutting official U.S. policy undermines our nation's ability to speak with one voice on the world stage. It also sets a dangerous precedent that could enable future interference in sensitive international matters. Maintaining a consistent, coherent foreign policy approach is vital for projecting American leadership and values abroad. I urge you to support calls for a formal investigation by the relevant authorities into this matter. Credible allegations of potentially illegal conduct related to foreign relations must be examined through proper legal channels. Preserving the checks and balances in our democratic system is essential.
