Say No to War in Iran

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden, Rep. Bonamici

From: A constituent in Hillsboro, OR

June 22

I write to you in urgent response to President Trump’s recent order of airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—illegally authorized without congressional approval earlier today, June 21, 2025. Under Article I of the U.S. Constitution, the power to declare war rests exclusively with Congress, and the War Powers Act requires prompt legislative oversight for military action. By initiating a major military operation without this mandate, the President has not only overstepped his constitutional authority but placed our nation on the brink of broader conflict. I respectfully demand that Congress: 1. Immediately reconvene to hold a formal vote to demand an immediate cessation of hostilities. 2. Enforce the War Powers Resolution, requiring withdrawal of forces unless a declaration or legislative approval is passed. 3. Commit to transparent oversight, including classified briefings and public reporting on objectives, risks, exit strategy, and humanitarian consequences. The American public—across the political spectrum—must have clarity on why we are being drawn back into the Middle East. Global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, warn of dangerous escalation following these strikes. Congress must uphold its constitutional guardianship, prevent presidential overreach, and ensure that any decision to use military force is grounded in law, not unilateral executive impulse. Thank you for your leadership during this critical moment for our democracy and global peace.
