I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent discussions about dismantling the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). I urge you to advocate for the preservation and continued support of this vital agency. USAID has been a cornerstone of American soft power since its establishment in 1961 under President John F. Kennedy. The agency’s initiatives in global health, poverty alleviation, and disaster relief have not only provided essential assistance to vulnerable populations but have also significantly enhanced America’s standing and influence worldwide. Moreover, USAID’s operations have substantial domestic economic benefits. The agency’s procurement policies often prioritize American goods and services, thereby supporting U.S. businesses and creating jobs. For instance, programs like the Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project are expected to fund approximately $4.4 billion worth of health commodities through the global supply chain over the life of the project, many of which are sourced from U.S. companies. Dismantling USAID would not only undermine America’s humanitarian efforts and global leadership but also negatively impact domestic industries that benefit from the agency’s procurement practices. In a time when global challenges require cooperative solutions, maintaining and strengthening USAID is crucial for both international stability and national economic interests. I respectfully request that you oppose any efforts to dismantle USAID and instead support measures that reinforce its mission and capabilities. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
