Shut Down NWDC and Release Joao Batista and Walter Osorio

To: Rep. Randall, Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray

From: A verified voter in Bremerton, WA

August 13

Shut down the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma and release the people held there now, including Joao Batista and Walter Osorio. GEO Group is running a facility where people are eating food contaminated with rat feces, going without medication for months, and enduring racist treatment from guards — all while the company cuts costs on clean bedding and cleaning crews to pad its profits. Joao Batista is 57 years old, disabled, and has lived in this country for 27 years. He has two daughters waiting for him. He has been detained for six months because of a USCIS processing failure — not a crime. Walter Osorio has lived here for 17 years, cannot walk without pain, was promised treatment five months ago, and is still waiting. These are not abstractions. These are people being harmed right now inside a facility in your district. The NWDC is a for-profit detention system designed to extract money from detained people and the federal government while providing the bare minimum to stay operational. That is not justice — it is a business model built on human suffering. Use your office to demand their release and push to close this facility.
