I'm disappointed, and I am angry, that the United States still has not ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. America signed CEDAW on July 17, 1980. The Senate has had the treaty since November 1980. Nearly every other country in the world has ratified it. We have not. That is not a technicality. It is a failure. It is insulting to American women that a treaty the United States helped write and then signed has been left unfinished for more than four decades. We tell the world that we lead on human rights. Then we refuse to join the principal international agreement against discrimination toward women. That gap between our words and our actions is embarrassing.I am asking you to stop treating this as an optional courtesy. Report CEDAW out of committee. Bring it to the Senate floor. Vote to ratify it. American women should not have to keep waiting for the Senate to finish work that began in 1980
