Please support the Military Law Enforcement Accountability Act. This legislation reinforces a basic rule of democracy: soldiers are not supposed to act as domestic law enforcement. The bill limits when troops can be deployed inside the U.S. to true emergencies like natural disasters or public health crises, requires the president to justify that decision in writing to Congress, and caps deployments at 14 days unless Congress votes to extend them.
The bill also bans people from serving in both the Department of Defense and civilian law enforcement at the same time, drawing a clear line between military force and policing. If the government breaks these rules, states and individuals would be able to sue. This legislation needs co-sponsors now. Every member of Congress should support it, This is about protecting civilian rule before it's tested in real life. The recent deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago plus today's SCOTUS decision against deployment of the National Guard in Chicago should give you confidence that this bill is urgently needed. I count on you to sign on as a sponsor and vote for the bill.
